Distance: 8 walking trails, from a half mile to more than 10 miles

Open, rolling fields, whispering breezes, silent cannons and caissons: Manassas Battlefield, the first of many blood-soaked grounds of the Civil War, is an ideal place for reflecting or relaxing. Or both. Eight walking trails, from a half mile to more than ten miles, lead to the main points where the Union and Confederate armies twice clashed during the war. The terrain has changed little. Cedars and dogwoods line some trails, farmlands spread out dramatically, and birds abound as you ponder the somber history. Open daily during daylight. For more information, see nps.gov/mana.
