Join the Environmental Film Festival and FreshFarm Markets for a screening of mini-documentaries under the header Symphony of the Soil at the Embassy of France. This multi-film project examines the mysteries and complexities of an underutilized natural resource: soil. Following the screening, there’s panel discussion with filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia, who’s also known for her 2004 documentary, The Future of Food. Benjamin Lambert of Restaurant Nora is providing hors d’oeuvres, and Derek Brown is mixing a special cocktail. Click here to purchase tickets ($30). 6:30.

New York’s largest craft brewer, Brooklyn Brewery, is featuring its beers with artisanal cheeses from International Gourmet at Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café. Brooklyn Brewery beer selections for the D.C. Beer Week event include Black Ops, Local 1, and Brooklyner-Schneider “Hopfen-weisse.” $5 to $7 per beer-and-cheese pairing. 6 to 9.

Khaira Arby, a Malian vocalist, is singing with her band at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. Arby swings between traditional African music and rock, using electric guitars and calabash. Free. 6 PM.

Wolf Trap’s Filene Center presents the Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Who knew heavy metal and flamenco would play so well together, particularly in homage to Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin? Click here to purchase tickets ($25 to $75). 8 PM.
