See a collection of intimate portraits in “Close to Home” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The photos are by nine contemporary photographers who used their own families as subjects. Through July 24; free.

Continuing its recent trend of book events, the Black Cat is hosting the aptly named Literature Party. Proceeds from the literary variety show and dance party support the Museum of Unnatural History, which is the home of 826DC, a nonprofit center dedicated to encouraging creativity in kids ages 8 to 16. 9; buy tickets ($10) at Ticket Alternative.
