Persistent Voices, a night of poetry and art, aims to honor those lost to HIV and AIDS and to raise awareness about the illness. Several local actors and community members are reading selections from the book of the same name, there is a discussion of the social history and effects of the disease. It’s at the True Reformer Building (1200 U St., NW). Reception begins at 6:30; no cover.

Wednesday, December  1
Mojo, a dark comedy set in a 1950s London rock club, opens at Studio Theatre tonight. Written by the innovative Jez Butterworth, the play explores power struggles among pill-popping gangsters after a murder. Purchase tickets ($30 to $35) here.

The Capital Irish Film Festival, hosted by Solas Nua, starts today.
