Thursday, October 16: We’re not quite sure why Justin Jones is playing a free show tonight at the Rock and Roll Hotel, but when you have a great local act (harmonica-tinged country rock) playing for, oh, zero dollars, you have no excuse not to head out. 9 PM.
Never heard of Israeli band Monotonix, who’s playing tonight at DC9? You probably will pretty soon. Their live performances are legendary. And by legendary, we mean totally insane and possibly requiring you to bring a first-aid kit. Go see for yourself. 8:30 PM; $10.

Friday, October 17: Oktoberfest winds down this weekend, but there are a few solid options remaining. One is at the German Embassy, where a black-tie party will include a buffet prepared by the embassy’s chef, German pastries, an open bar with wine and Oktoberfest beer, performances by a local dance group, and a traditional band. 8 to midnight; $89.
Get dark at AFI this weekend, as it launches the Noir City DC film series. Showcasing noir classics like Side Street, Double Indemnity, Detour, Sunset Boulevard, and lots more, the series will provide the perfect excuse for you to break out that fedora and cigar. Get in a spooky mood by taking a haunted tour of the National Building Museum. The ghost of Mary Stuart guides a lantern-lit tour through the museum’s many mysteries and haunted past. 8 to 9 PM; tickets are $12 for members, $18 for nonmembers.
Saturday, October 18: Rustico Restaurant and Bar will host an outdoor block-party celebration today from noon to 5. The festivities will include 18 festbiers, two harvest ales, and five pumpkin ales. The other restaurants in the Neighborhood Restaurant Group—Evening Star Cafe, Vermilion, Tallula, EatBar, and Buzz Bakery—will also serve food, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Capitol Area Food Bank. Admission is free; beer is $5 to $9 a pint.
For the opening of the exhibition "Garden and Cosmos: The Royal Paintings of Jodhpur," the Freer and Sackler Galleries are hosting a two-day festival celebrating India. The legendary Howard Homecoming is this weekend, and there are a lot of events going on. One to check out is the co-ed slumber party at Republic Gardens. From 2 AM to 10 AM (yes, you read those times right), the bar invites you to put on your grown-up pajamas and party. There’ll be drink specials until 3 AM, and a breakfast bar from 3 AM to 5 AM.
Sunday, October 19: Featuring the work of 180 artists and craftspeople from around the country, the Bethesda Row Arts Festival includes displays of ceramics, fabrics, glass, jewelry, metalwork, paintings, and more. There’ll also be artist demonstrations, children’s art activities, live entertainment, street performers, and food vendors. Proceeds from art sales will benefit NIH Children’s Charities. The festival opens at 11 AM both days and closes at 6 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday.
Soulish, electro-tinged cool pop from Sweden is what you’ll get if you check out the charming chanteuse Lykke Li at the Black Cat tonight. 8 PM; $15.
