The Week in Food Events: Hemingway’s Birthday at Mockingbird Hill, Penn Social’s Pancakes & Booze

Plus a paella cooking class at Taberna Del Alabardero.

Italian wine dinner: Bibiana starts the week on a winey note with a dinner on Monday highlighting vino from Prá winery. The Italian producer is known for its Soave and Amarone varietals, which youll sip with a three-course menu. The meal begins at 7:30 ($145 per person, all-inclusive), and must be reserved by calling 202-216-9550.

Happy birthday, Hemingway: Mockingbird Hill commemorates the author’s 115th birthday on Tuesday with a happy hour from 5 to 7. Author Phil Greene will sign copies and recount tales from his book, To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companionwhile mixologist Chantal Tseng will mix specialty sherry drinks. 

Beery hour: Brightest Young Things and New Belgium Brewing host a happy hour at Bar Pilar on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30. Guests can sip $5 Grätzer, a smoky summertime brew, as well as other beers from the brewery, and get free caricature artist paintings. Admission is free. 

Tequila time: Try out a variety of tequilas at Casa Oaxaca during “Oaxacafest” on Wednesday. Guests can pick six antojitos such as blue corn quesadillas stuffed with squash blossoms and goat cheese, braised chicken tamales, and pork short ribs with green mole, all paired with various tequilas and cocktails. The all-night menu is $65 per person. 

Brunch for dinner: Like something stiffer than coffee with your flapjacks? Try Penn Socials Pancakes & Booze Art Show on Thursday. The event, from 8 PM to 2 AM, involves more than 50 emerging artists, live music, body paint, and an all-you-can-eat pancake bar.

California wine dinner: Restaurant Eve hosts a meal with Failla wines on Thursday at 7. A six-course meal will be paired with the West Coast wines ($200 per person). E-mail tiffany@restauranteve.com for information and reservations. 

Paella class: Head to Taberna Del Alabardero on Saturday for a paella cooking class from 10 to 2. Chef Javier Romero leads guests through five different recipes, which you’ll taste with a gratis glass of sangria or house wine. A recipe book is also included. Reservations ($110) are available online. 

Sweet preview: Get a sneak peek of the treats from Rare Sweets at Salt & Sundry during a pop-up on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2.  Pastry chef Meredith Tomason, who’s opening her shop in City Center this fall, will have DIY s’mores kits, brownies, peanut brittle, and more.  

Brau-nch: Head to City Tap House on Sunday for a local beery brunch, courtesy of DC Brau. You’ll find drafts of their classic brews, as well as seasonal creations to pair with the menu.
