As of Friday, barbecue fans will have a new smokehouse to explore. Former Hill Country pit master Rob Sonderman is setting up shop in Bloomingdale, partnering with Revive Events and Catering for a counter-order ’cue joint at a space just off Truxton Circle Park.

The menu at DCity Smokehouse riffs on soul food and barbecue classics: Dishes range from fried chicken and red velvet waffles with bourbon syrup to dry-rubbed pork ribs with house-made pickles and Texas toast. There’s also a lineup of sandwiches, such as a shrimp po’ boy and a Mexican-style torta filled with red-chili-marinated chicken, avocado, and queso fresco. Sides—priced at $3—include cheffy items like crispy Brussels sprouts as well as more traditional items such as potato salad and hushpuppies. Five stools (and no alcohol) means most orders are made for carryout. Then again, barbecue is one of the best road foods.

DCity Smokehouse. 8 Florida Ave., NW; 202-667-1212. Open Tuesday through Saturday noon to 8; large orders can be reserved for Sunday pickup on Friday or before.
