Dirt Cheap Eats 2007: Stella’s Bakery

Cafes & Carryouts

Known for its Mediterranean and European sweets, Stella’s also turns out savory cheese, spinach, and turkey-and-sour-cream pies ($2.75) that make a great snack or lunch. Shaped in half moons and rounds, the flaky pies are served warm.

Greek almond crescent cookies and dense triangles of walnut-and-honey baklava are nicely turned-out sweets. Another rare treat are the halvas, imported from Israel and made with sesame paste, honey, and flavorings such as pistachio and chocolate. And even if the fruit-strewn custard cake isn’t especially Greek, it’s delicious.
