Best of 2004: Flower Arrangements

Forget supermarket bouquets and overpriced arrangements. You can learn to do it yourself--and throw a party at the same time.

Sarah von Schrader of Urban Petals (202-297-4270; www.urbanpetals.com) will come to your home with buckets of roses, mums, dahlias, orchids, and thistle. For three hours, she'll lead you and your guests through the art of arranging in a relaxed, social atmosphere.

"It's so much easier for people to arrange flowers when they've had a glass of wine," says von Schrader, 26, a Yale history major who apprenticed with floral designers in New York City. She's teaching holiday workshops featuring pine, berries, and wintry white cabbage as well as Valentine's Day classes for men.
