Best of 2004: Tortillas To Go

The tortillas at El Tapatio are better than anything you can find packaged.

Fresh, warm handmade tortillas are good enough to eat sans filling–and worlds apart from the packaged variety. At El Tapatio (4309 Kenilworth Ave., Bladensburg; 301-403-8882), an authentic Guadalajaran cafe, the savory rounds of corn flour are baked on the griddle fresh daily. Call an hour in advance to order–they're six for $1. Chances are you'll eat a few on the way home, so figure accordingly or you won't have any left for tacos.
