AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center
The European Union Film Showcase from November 2 to 19 features some of the best new films from across the Atlantic.
Lunacy, the latest from Czech surrealist Jan Svankmajer, is based on two Edgar Allan Poe stories. French New Wave director Claude Chabrol’s thriller The Bridesmaid chronicles the evolution of a relationship from passionate to dangerous. And Starter for Ten follows a working-class student as he fumbles through his first year at a ritzy university in England.
AFI plays tribute to Brit Carol Reed, the first movie director to be knighted, with a retrospective November 24 to January 11. His 1949 film-noir thriller, The Third Man, kicks it off. Others to look for: 1947’s Odd Man Out, 1948’s The Fallen Idol, and the 1968 Oscar winner Oliver!
