Fourth of July Recipe: Jeremy Onesko’s Muddle America Cocktail

WestEnd Bistro bartender Jeremy Onesko mixes this fizzy drink at all his family cookouts. With a base of rye whiskey, it couldn’t be a better pairing for the fireworks on Independence Day: The spirit was the sip of choice for our founding fathers after they chased away the redcoats.

Muddle America

Serves 1

5 to 7 plump blackberries
5 to 6 fresh mint leaves
1 ounce simple syrup
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1½ ounces rye whiskey
1 12-ounce bottle ginger beer

In a shaker, muddle the blackberries with the mint leaves. Add the simple syrup, lemon juice, and whiskey and shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice into a tall highball glass and top with ginger beer.
