Thursday, October 9: The Rock and Roll Hotel is hosting the SAFE & Sound benefit concert this evening. Former Georgie James member Laura Burhenn, Olivia & the Housemates, Lode Runner, and the Spiritual Machine will all be performing, and proceeds from the concert will benefit Survivors and Advocates for Empowerment (SAFE). It’s Second Thursday Art Night at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, and tonight’s theme is archaeology. There will be a lecture about historical preservation, a reception for the exhibit “Revealed Histories,” and an exhibit on discovering and examining the lives of our predecessors. From 6 to 9; free.

Friday, October 10: Kick off your Friday night with Latin-tinged music and loads of dancing when Los Amigos Invisibles and Bio Ritmo hit the mainstage at the Black Cat. 9; $25.
Madame Tussauds may be a fun gimmick of a museum—creepy lifelike wax figures of celebrities—but with its entrance fee of nearly $20, it never seemed worth the price. But that all changes for a few days. In celebration of the museum’s first anniversary in DC, if you sing “Happy Birthday” at the box office, you’ll be able to enter for just $1. The special goes through tomorrow.
Legend has it that 13 children vanished from a boarding school located in what is now known as the Haunted Woods at Algonkian Regional Park. Take the haunted walk, and perhaps you’ll hear the children’s laughter. First tour begins at 7; last ticket sold at 9:30 on weeknights and 10:30 on weekends; $13. Saturday, October 11: Miss last weekend’s Taste of Bethesda? Today from 11 to 4, you can hit Taste of Georgetown. The food-and-wine festival features a wide range of neighborhood restaurants—including 1789, Mendocino Grille and Wine Bar, and Tackle Box—offering samples (tasting tickets cost $5), and an Old World wine pavilion ($10 entry fee). A panel of judges, including the Food Network’s Marc Silverstein, will pick the event’s best appetizer, entrée, display, and dessert. Need a fairy-tale escape? The National Gallery of Art screens I Was a Swiss Banker in the East Building’s auditorium. The film follows a young Swiss banker who abruptly dives into Lake Constance with a bagful of money. Director Thomas Imbach also fits singing mermaids and other enchanted creatures into this 75-minute adventure. 4 PM.
The seventh annual Maryland Brewer’s Oktoberfest will be held today at the Timonium Fairgrounds, just north of Baltimore. There will be more than 75 beers, 12 breweries, German food, “oompah bands,” a biggest-beer-belly competition, a Miss Oktoberfest contest, and more. Noon to 8; adult admission (including a tasting mug) is $20 in advance, $25 on-site, and designated-driver tickets are $10. Wearing German attire will earn you extra drinks. Sunday, October 12: Upstate New York native Ra Ra Riot bring its blend of pop rock and classical string arrangements to the Black Cat. Walter Meego and the Morning Benders open the show, which has been moved from the backstage to the main room. 8:30; tickets are $12.
The Sugarloaf Craft Festival wraps up today at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. More than 300 artists and designers from all over the country will showcase their pottery, photographs, clothing, jewelry, and more. There will be live music, and children can enjoy costume storytelling. From 10 to 5; $8, under 12 free.
