Things to Do

Listen Up!

Every Tuesday, Listen Up! brings you songs of bands and performers coming through town in the next week. Listen up, then go check them out live.

It’s impossible to attend a dance party where “Hearts on Fire” or “Lights and Music” aren’t played, so we weren’t surprised the electro-pop duo Cut Copy’s show at the 9:30 Club sold out quickly. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, another one of our picks from our fall music-preview playlist, sold out its show at DC9. We thought we were left with slim pickings, but there’s still a decent lineup of shows worth checking out this week, including the Icelandic one-man band Mugison, a post-Pitchfork-review Black Kids, and Gossip Girl favorite the Virgins.
Mugison, whose eclectic sound has earned him comparisons to Beck—and who we personally think has the craziest falsetto we’ve heard in a while—plays at DC9 with the local band Bellman Barker opening. Another one-man show in town this week is Ben Folds. Way to Normal, Folds’s latest album, goes on sale at the end of the month, and the piano man brings his blend of catchy pop tunes to DAR Constitution Hall.

At the Black Cat, Brooklyn takes the stage with fellow bands Oxford Collapse and Takka Takka on Thursday. Friday night, the Gossip Girl contingent—we’re hoping to spot (ha ha, get it?) a crowd of Blair Waldorf look-alikes—takes over the club as the Virgins open for the Black Kids.
