Beat the Scalpers

Every Thursday, we find the hottest shows and let you know when tickets are going on sale so you don’t have to do the work. This week’s lineup: indie rockers, a country crooner, and a classical violinist.

Baltimore’s famed alternative-music venue, Ottobar (2549 N. Howard St.; 410-662-0069), holds a benefit party August 14 to raise funds for a pending lawsuit. According to an official statement, “For legal purposes, [Ottobar] can not discuss the reason for this event.” Juicy! Enjoy DJs and drink specials. Tickets ($10) went on sale earlier this week.

The local boys from Hotspur have hit the big time with a show at the 9:30 Club September 3. Last month, the Rockville natives were named the winners of the New Music Seminar’s “Artist on the Verge” contest. Tickets ($15) went on sale yesterday.

The British alt-rockers the Klaxons head to the 9:30 Club September 21 with songs from their second studio album, Surfing the Void. Tickets ($20) went on sale yesterday.

New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman heads to Sixth & I Historic Synagogue on October 5 to talk about his most recent book, The Food Matters Cookbook: Lose Weight and Heal the Planet with More Than 500 Recipes. Tickets ($12, or $35 for two tickets and a copy of the book) went on sale earlier this week.

Attention, country-music lovers: Hank Williams Jr. takes the stage at the Patriot Center October 9 as part of the American Freedom Festival. Tickets ($27 to $131.50) go on sale August 6 at 10 AM.

It’s an indie extravaganza! Motion City Soundtrack, Say Anything, Saves the Day, and Valencia share the stage at Sonar in Baltimore November 12. Tickets go on sale August 6 at noon.

Classical violinist David Garrett brings his unique musical sensibilities to the Birchmere February 22. Garrett’s performances often include classical sonatas as well as not-so-traditional orchestral versions of songs such as Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters.” Tickets ($55) go on sale August 6 at noon.
