This week, hang out at a pig party, hear about the sweet tooths of presidents, and learn how to preserve all those summer tomatoes.

Monday, August 9
Chef Brad Spates is teaching a course on using farmers-market ingredients. The Cookology instructor will give participants tips on picking good produce, basic cooking techniques, and pairing flavor profiles. To purchase tickets ($65)—which include dinner and a glass of wine—click here. 7 to 9.

Tuesday, August 10
Jason Tesauro of Barboursville Vineyards is the guest speaker at a four-course Virginia-harvest dinner at Wildfire in McLean. The event, which starts at 6:30 with passed hors d’oeuvres, includes a glass of Barboursville wine with every course. Chef Steven Lukis is cooking such dishes as Virginia rockfish with a warm lobster salad, beef tenderloin with corn on the cob, and pineapple-banana bread pudding. Wednesday, August 11
Check out Pig-a-Palooza—Jackson 20’s porcine celebration on the second Wednesday of each month. The spread, served in the restaurant’s courtyard, includes pulled-pork shoulder, East Carolina barbecue, ribs, potato salad, smoked corn, and pies. The party runs from 5:30 to 10:30 and is $35 in advance or $45 at the door. Call 703-842-2790 for reservations, which are recommended.

Thursday, August 12
The Neighborhood Farm Initiative is sponsoring “Saving Seeds: Food, Film and Conversation on Urban Farming” at the Letelier Theater. The night starts with local wine and hors d’oeuvres. Next is a screening of Corner Plot, a short documentary about 89-year-old Charlie Koiner who maintains a one-acre piece of farmland inside the Beltway. NFI will also show a film about its summer youth programs. The movies are followed by a 30-minute Q&A session with the filmmakers and urban farmers. Friday, August 13
The Art Whino gallery in National Harbor is hosting the first in a monthly series of events—called Indulge—that pair art, music, and food. Tonight, Mie N Yu restaurant is behind a three-course menu with cocktail pairings. Dishes are tuna tartare with chili peppers, lemongrass, and soy; beef salad with mixed greens; and pecan-and-chocolate tarts. Singer Tamara Wellons will perform. Saturday, August 14
Roland Mesnier, a former White House pastry chef, talks about and signs copies of his book, All the President’s Pastries: Twenty-Five Years in the White House. It tells his tales of serving five presidents and first ladies. The event, 1 to 3:30, is on the second floor of the National Museum of American History, where you can buy the book for $24.95.

Sunday, August 15
Two twentysomethings—executive chef Daniel Giusti and pastry chef Travis Olson—have freshened up 1789, an old Georgetown institution. They’re teaching a cooking class that focuses on summer tomatoes. Participants will make bloody Mary cocktails from scratch and learn how to preserve tomatoes for winter. The class, $100, starts at 11 AM and includes a three-course lunch with wine pairings.
