FreshFarm Markets and the Environmental Film Festival are hosting a screening of Symphony of the Soil, a series of short films about the earth’s ground layer, at the Embassy of France. A panel discussion moderated by FreshFarm cofounder Ann Yonkers follows, with chef Cathal Armstrong of Restaurant Eve, Derek Brown of the Passenger, and farmer Zach Lester of Tree and Leaf Farm. Heavy Seas beer—a Baltimore-based brewery—made only two oak casks of its Loose Cannon IPA, and ChurchKey has one of them to tap tonight. In total, there are six cask-condition beers and one vintage barleywine, including the bourbon-barrel-aged Hang Ten, the West-Hopped Loose Cannon with locally grown hops, and the Peg Leg stout. The bar is also giving away beer glasses. 6 to 9.

Phil Greene of the Museum of the American Cocktail and Jerry LeNoir, cofounder of Mr-Booze.com, are teaching a mixology class, “The Home Bar: The Basics and Beyond,” at Occidental Grill & Seafood. The seminar, from 7 to 8:30, gives an introduction to spirits, cocktail recipes, and bar tools. As part of Columbia Heights Day, a group of bloggers organized the DC State Fair, which takes place tomorrow at Tubman Elementary Field (11th and Irving sts., NW). There’s a kickoff party tonight at 1314 Kenyon Street, Northwest, where judges will bestow the first homemade-goods award for the best beer. Monday is the last day to enter as a homebrewer. Saturday, August 28
Learn how to make fruit-based desserts at Sur la Table in Arlington. In a hands-on class, which starts at 10, participants will make peach-and-blackberry cobbler, nectarine-and-plum tartlets, and apricot-cherry shortcakes. For more information and to purchase tickets ($69), click here.

Linganore Winecellars in Mount Airy is putting on a two-day festival (Saturday and today) with food vendors, winetastings, live bands, and a tour of the vineyard. Events run from noon to 3 and from 3:30 to 6 both days. Admission is $15 for ages 21 and up, $10 for ages 18 to 20, free for those under age 18. For more information, click here.
