Wear + When: Outdoor Movies

What to wear to a free film

Outdoor movie season, how we love thee. Screen on the Green, Comcast Film Festival, NoMa Summer Screen . . . No one has officially run the numbers, but we bet the bevy of starlit movie festivals in Washington this summer probably makes it possible to catch a free film every night of the week. Haven’t been yet? Check out our handy Films Al Fresco guide, pack a picnic dinner, then put all the money you saved toward a new outfit for the occasion.

Hot and sticky August evenings call for loose-fitting blouses in airy fabrics and shorts that make long stretches sitting on the grass more comfortable. Try swapping standard denim cutoffs for a pair of sweet scalloped hems, and add chunky wedges or espadrilles for height that won’t hurt to walk in.

Our picks include:

DeLiA*s Zoe striped dolman top, $29.50; EmersonMade Poppy flower pin, $84; Madewell Sunset sandal, $148; Rachel Comey petal shorts, $155.50; Rachel Comey Edgartown print camp shirt, $139; Sam Edelman hunter-green Leroy Espadrille, $149.95; Kevia gold-plated bangle, $100.
