MUSICAL: The musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s beloved novel, The Color Purple, has officially opened at the National Theatre. Produced by Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones, there’s a local connection as well—two ensemble members are graduates of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. MUSIC: Virginia native and folk-rocker Aimee Mann is performing at the Birchmere. Her most recent album, @#%&*!Smilers, has garnered heaps of critical praise. Buy tickets ($49.50) at Ticketmaster; she’s also playing April 12.

THEATER: Fragments is a collection of five short plays from the master of absurdity, Samuel Beckett. They’ll be directed by the 86 year-old theater veteran Peter Brook. At the Kennedy Center through April 17; purchase tickets ($20 to $49) at the Kennedy Center’s site.
