The New Guard: Chris Holben

Chris Holben

Program manager, Capital Bikeshare

In his ten years as bicycle-program specialist for the District Department of Transportation, Chris Holben has been at the forefront of the city’s evolution from a place with no bike lanes to one of the most bike-friendly in the nation. Holben oversees all aspects of DC’s Capital Bikeshare—the highly successful bike-sharing program, which celebrated its two-year anniversary in September—from deciding where to install the next bike station to securing the program’s funding.

Next, Capital Bikeshare plans to expand to Montgomery County and Takoma Park and eventually Prince George’s County. So far the program has grown to include 18,000 annual members and a quarter million casual users—generating about 50,000 bike rides a week. Holben dreams of one day seeing as many Capital Bikeshare stations as bus stops.
