Dr. Ossakow and Dr. Skinner answer common questions on sleep apnea. Dr. Ossakow and Dr. Skinner can be reached at Skinner, Ossakow & Associates located at 5651 Stone Rd, Centreville, VA 20120. (703) 830-3092.

Why are Dr. Ossakow and Dr. Skinner the best choice for sleep apnea treatment?

Dr. Ossakow and Dr. Skinner have taken numerous hours in the area for treating sleep apnea with dental devices. They also have done many cases on patients in the Northern Virginia Area, some of the most according to various sleep centers. Dr. Ossakow takes sleep apnea personally as he has benefited himself from an oral appliance and has seen his sleep and health vastly improve.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops periodically during sleep, as many as 20-30 times per hour. Each time you stop breathing in your sleep, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing. Since the time spent awake is so brief, most people with sleep apnea don’t remember it, and many believe they are getting a good night’s sleep when, in fact, they are not. The constant wake-sleep, wake-sleep cycle prevents those with sleep apnea from achieving deep sleep, resulting in a constant drowsy feeling during the day. Untreated sleep apnea patients have a four times higher rate of stroke and other cardiovascular disease.

How is sleep apnea treated by a dentist?

Sleep apnea is treated by the dentist by having impressions taken and then having a custom made device (quite similar to a night guard for tooth grinding), which repositions the jaw in a way which opens the airway to achieve optimal breathing throughout the night.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment takes only two visits to our office.

Is there a recovery period and how long?

There is no recovery period.
