In DC: Defense executive James Shinn and wife Masako sold a six-bedroom, seven-bath house in Georgetown for $5 million. They bought the property for $5.8 million in January 2004 and originally listed it for $8.5 million in October 2007. The house was built in 1870 and has a three-car garage. An alum of the State Department and CIA, Shinn was assistant Secretary of Defense for Asia and the Pacific from 2007 to 2008.
Journalist Abigail Trafford sold a seven-bedroom, five-bath house on Upton Street in DC’s Forest Hills neighborhood for $1.6 million. The home has five fireplaces and a library. A former Washington Post health editor, Trafford is the author of My Time: Making the Most of the Bonus Decades After 50.
Foreign-policy executive Richard Boucherand his wife,Carolyn Brehm, bought a Victorian on Dumbarton Street in Georgetown for $1.6 million. Built in 1893, the house has three bedrooms and three baths. Boucher has served as ambassador to Cyprus, assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, and State Department spokesman. He now works for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which analyzes data from dozens of countries.
Journalist Sandra McElwaine sold a home on R Street in Georgetown for $1.1 million. A contributor to the Web site The Daily Beast, McElwaine has been a correspondent for CNN, the Baltimore Sun, and People as well as Washington editor of Vogue and Cosmopolitan.
Entrepreneur and author Jeremy Haft and his wife, lobbyist Joy Drucker, bought a four-bedroom, five-bath Colonial on 37th Street in Tenleytown for $1.3 million. Haft is chairman of BChinaB, a manufacturing firm that works with private suppliers in China. A commentator on cultural, policy, and business issues in China, he is author of All the Tea in China: How to Buy, Sell, and Make Money on the Mainland. Drucker is managing director at the Glover Park Group, a lobbying and public-relations firm based in DC.
In Virginia: Insurance executive and tennis great Frederick V. McNair IV sold a five-bedroom, four-bath Colonial in McLean’s Langley Oaks neighborhood for $1.3 million. The house sits on half an acre and has an exercise room and library. McNair is president of McNair & Company, an estate-planning firm in McLean. In 1976, he won the French Open Doubles Championship and was the number-one-ranked doubles player in the world along with partner Sherwood Stewart.
Also in Langley Oaks, manufacturing executive Michael Ansari sold a four-bedroom, four-bath Colonial on Bellamine Court for $1.1 million. Ansari is founder and CEO of Reston-based MIC Industries, which creates mobile factories used in the construction of steel buildings.
In Maryland: Lawyer David Tewksbury bought a six-bedroom, six-bath Arts and Crafts–style house in Chevy Chase for $2.4 million. Built in 2009, the 6,300-square-foot home has an elevator. Tewksbury is a partner in the DC office of King & Spalding, specializing in energy law.
