Salt & Pepper Books isn’t just a bookstore. The shop in Occoquan does stock some 1,500 food-related titles—including cookbooks and food novels—but a peek into the window reveals many other quirky culinary items a food enthusiast would enjoy.
“I pick stuff that I would want in my own house,” says owner Christine Myskowski. That includes cheese-themed puzzles, wooden cupcake sets for kids, polka-dot-printed spatulas, and fabric snack sacks.
A native of nearby Woodbridge, Myskowski worked in finance in Richmond before returning to the area to open the shop in 2007. She says she loves being in historic Occoquan: “It’s a small town within this huge area, which is just really, really nice.”
Among her most popular books are the Wine Country Mysteries series by Northern Virginia writer Ellen Crosby and Cooking With All Things Trader Joe’s. But Myskowski’s personal favorite is a classic—The Moosewood Cookbook by Mollie Katzen: “It’s a book I’ve had since college, and I love it still.”
