Rachael and Keith’s fathers were fishing buddies, so they’d known each other their whole lives. Their childhoods were further intertwined as Rachael played on Keith’s brother’s basketball team and Keith played volleyball with Rachael’s brothers. As they got older, they started chatting more and more online. Finally, after an eight-hour chat session, their online relationship turned to real life when they went on a first date to Ben’s Chili Bowl. A walk from there to the DC Aquarium and around the tidal basin turned their lunch date into a dinner date, so they ended the hours of conversation over pizza in Dupont.

They’d dated for three and a half years when Rachael was working from home. Keith arrived at their place and told her he’d picked up the mail and that there was a letter in it for her. As Rachael opened the envelope to find a love letter from Keith inside, he as waiting for her downstairs, flowers and a ring in hand. Both Keith and Rachael’s grandmothers attended the engagement party, at which they realized they had been childhood friends, though neither had seen the other for nearly 50 years.

For their wedding at DC’s L’Aiglon Mansion, the groom himself made the altar backdrop out of pieces of lace they’d purchased on Etsy. For the second half of the reception, Rachael wore a traditional Chinese cheongsam. Though the dresses are typically red, Rachael’s was a white version which had been handed down through her family.

They stuck to a minimalist palette for their wedding at L’Aiglon Mansion—the navy blue bridesmaid dresses stood out among the white and champagne color scheme that ran throughout the rest of wedding. After a night of dancing and laughing with loved ones, the happy couple departed for a honeymoon in New Orleans and Mexico.
