Where & When: What to Do Tonight

Sports agents, sportswriters, and Vulcans, all in Washington tonight

He had us at hello—at least once upon a time he did. Revisit Tom Cruise at the height of his charm with the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival’s screening of Jerry Maguire. And you don’t even have to show them the money. The movie, at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, is free. 8:15 pm.

For a take on sports that blames owners—not agents or athletes—for the rise of steroids, ruinous public-financing deals for stadiums, and league expansion that dilutes the quality of play, Dave Zirin stops by Politics and Prose tonight to discuss his new book, Bad Sports: How Owners Are Ruining the Games We Love. Zirin, a columnist for the Nation, has long made connections between athletics and politics, and he does so with a sharp pen—and hook. Free; books are $25. 7 PM.

Crystal Screen’s summer Star Trek festival finishes up with a screening of the 2009 franchise reboot Star Trek. So if sexy Vulcans and Iowa farm boys are more your type than hyped-up sports agents with newly discovered consciences, head through a black hole and down to 18th and Bell streets in Crystal City. Free; film starts at sundown, which tonight is around 8.
