Seeing Red—and Wonders

Two quirky H Street, Northeast, neighbors combine to form a new live-music venue

When The Red & The Black and Palace of Wonders combine next month, they’ll drop some words, a color, and the wonders, then mash together their upstairs spaces—and what’s left of their names—to form Red Palace. The result is a 200-capacity venue that should compete with the nearby Rock & Roll Hotel for top venue on H Street.

When it opens October 15, the lineup will include Xiu Xiu, the Aggrolites, and Blood Red Shoes. So far, there aren’t any sword swallowers or nude contortionist jugglers in the pipeline, but they’re sure to be coming. For the first time at either venue, advanced ticketing will be available.

From September 26 through October 14, both upstairs performance spaces will be dark while workers knock down walls and build stages. But both downstairs bars will be open, if you’re into drinking around carpentry. Click here to keep up with the progress.
