Living Spaces: Award-Winning Homes

By Ellen Ryan    Published Friday, June 01, 2007

“Too many people think good design has to be expensive and big money has to be traditional,” said a judge of this year’s Washingtonian Residential Design Awards. So the judges praised the Washington area’s “incredibly wide variety and high quality” of housing. The winners represent that variety. (See the full list of winners, with photos.)

This year’s competition, which drew 120 entries, was open to registered architects of local homes and second homes owned by Washingtonians. On the jury were Alexander Gorlin, head of his own firm in Manhattan; Dennis Hertlein, partner in Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein of Atlanta; and Jerry Lance Hupy, partner in Shope Reno Wharton of Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Washingtonian Residential Design Awards are sponsored by the Washington chapter of the American Institute of Architects and The Washingtonian.
