Anthropologie
The only danger with crossing the threshold of Anthropologie is trying to leave empty-handed. Every nook and cranny of this large, enticingly perfumed store is loaded with seasonal dresses, separates, and outerwear. We often make a beeline to the sale area near the dressing rooms for low prices on art books, unusual furniture hardware, small leather goods, and upholstery.

11965 Market St., Reston; 703-707-9866

Appalachian Spring
One of the first stores to open in Reston Town Center when it was built in 1990, Appalachian Spring specializes in handcrafted art glass, wooden toys, pottery, and one-of-a-kind dining and cookware pieces made by artisans from around the country. The store carries an impressive collection of handmade kaleidoscopes and contemporary hand-blown glass paperweights.

11877 Market St., Reston; 703-478-2218.

The Dandelion Patch
If top-notch paper products are your thing, swing by the Dandelion Patch for custom-engraved wedding invitations, personal letterpress stationery, and greeting cards. Owner Heidi Kallett hand-picks the charming photo frames, animal-print cosmetic bags, scented candles, and children’s floor puzzles that make up some of the store’s gift options.

11923 Market St., Reston; 703-689-2240.

Davelle Clothiers
This shop carries men’s suits by designers including Ermenegildo Zegna, Hugo Boss, Canali, and Joseph Abboud. Businessmen come from across the region to have owner and master tailor David Eisele Sr. make a custom suit from a large selection of high-quality Italian fabrics. Eisele also provides suits to the DC United soccer team.

11904 Market St., Reston; 703-904-0011.

Footsteps of Reston
Real runners will feel right at home at Footsteps of Reston, where the store’s friendly staff can measure and fit your foot in the right running shoe. Everything about this small mom-and-pop store is designed to give shoppers an alternative to the superstore experience. The brands carried (New Balance, Asics, Saucony) are favored by distance runners who frequent the tree-lined trails behind Footsteps.

Lou Lou
Need a quick accessories fix? Head to Lou Lou for reasonably priced purses by Orla Kiely and Samsara, the vegan handbag designer; brightly patterned wool and cotton scarves; and good-looking low-top cowboy boots by Lucchese. Prices range from $10 for a pair of dangling earrings to $300 for a colorful necklace by Satya Jewelry.

Montague and Son: The Birkenstock Store
In an unassuming mall near the center of historic Herndon, Montague and Son is about as far from the high-rise glamour of Reston Town Center as you can get. But shoppers will appreciate the warm welcome from a staff member. This shop specializes in comfortable shoes from Birkenstock, Dansko, and Naot, and it also offers industrial-strength rubber and leather shoes for restaurant and hospital workers.

316 Elden St., Herndon; 703-471-6688.

Small Change Consignments
It may take an hour or more to look through the clothing racks here, but it’s worth the time. Gently used children’s clothing, shoes, pajamas, strollers, games, books, and highchairs can be found in the cheerful purple-walled boutique. One recent visit turned up a nearly new boy’s wool coat from the Gap for $15 and several pairs of girls’ jeans for $7 each. The staff also accepts maternity clothing on consignment, a real find for expectant and new mothers.

1629 Washington Plaza N., Reston; 703-437-7730.

South Moon Under
Hip moms can comfortably rub shoulders with fashionable teens at South Moon Under, which has one of the best high-end denim departments outside of a major department store. A terrific spot for gifts, the Reston location also stands out for its selection of fun sportswear for men and women, cool shoes, swimwear, and tabletop items.

11950 Market St., Reston; 703-435-0605.
