Dueling karaoke mikes, Craigslist bands, and Ping-Pong are among the cheap thrills this weekend

Reigning champs from karaoke nights at Sticky Rice and Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar are duking it out for the title at the third Annual H Street Karaoke Championship Thursday, held at the neighboring Rock & Roll Hotel. The doors open at 8, and the competition starts at 9. Free.

The House of France screens Le Bruit des Glaçons (The Clink of Ice) Friday. The 2010 dark comedy tells the story of an alcoholic writer who’s visited by his cancer’s human incarnation. Buy tickets ($8) through Eventbrite. 7 PM.

The bands Attic Ends from New York City and Custer’s Last Stand from DC team up to raise money for Aprendamos Juntos, a program that aids children with learning disabilities in Lima, Peru. The benefit show is at the Velvet Lounge Friday from 8 to 11. $8.

Great Noise Ensemble, a group of 20 instrumentalists and two singers who originally gathered via a Craigslist ad, plays the Friday Night Eclectic show at Strathmore this week at 8 PM. Buy tickets ($9 to $10) through Strathmore’s Web site—they’re also available for $12 at the door.

Head to Comet Ping Pong Friday for an evening of pizza, table tennis, and local music when Washington-area bands Alma Tropicala, Super Vacations, and Cane & the Sticks play at the popular Northwest DC hangout. Music starts at 10:30. $10.

There’s a free symposium, “Hide/Seek: Addressing (and Redressing) the Silence: New Scholarship in Sexuality and American Art,” at the National Portrait Gallery’s McEvoy Auditorium Saturday. Several renowned art historians and lecturers are giving presentations on works in the museum’s controversial exhibit “Hide/Seek.” Register through Eventbrite. 9 to 5.

Jon Spelman’s new one-man show, Tales of the Lincoln, premieres at Ford’s Theatre Saturday. The show tells stories about Abraham Lincoln as well as stories that Lincoln allegedly shared about himself. Reserve a ticket on Ticketmaster. 11:30 AM. Free.

Saturday, there’s an opening reception for “Biomorphic,” artist Gigi Bio’s new solo show at the Art Whino Gallery. She specializes in digital-photo collages of urban life. 7 to 11. Free.

DJ Gavin Holland and New York’s Sammy Bananas are spinning at DC9 Saturday. The dance party starts at 9. Tickets are free before 10, $8 after.
