Ten Under $10: Fun on a Budget

Learn about the Washington Post’s Katharine Graham when the National Portrait Gallery’s Face-to-Face talk focuses on the legendary newspaper publisher and hostess. It’s held in conjunction with the “One Life: Katharine Graham” exhibit. 6 PM; free.

Story League, a new storytelling group cofounded by Washingtonian contributing editor Cathy Alter, gives its first performance Thursday. “Sins of Youth,” featuring local writers, actors, standup comics, and others is at the Black Fox Lounge (1723 Connecticut Ave., NW) at 8. If you missed its theatrical run—or can’t get enough of brooding teen wizards—catch Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, Part I, at Arlington Cinema ’N’ Drafthouse Thursday at 7. $2.

For proof that there’s more to an attorney’s wardrobe than black, black, and more black, check out Howard Law School’s fashion show, “Intelligent Design,” at Garment District DC (1005 Seventh St., NW) Friday. The event features the work of three law students as well as other local designers. 7 to 8:30; free.

Cara L. Peterson, author of Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City, reads and signs books at Politics and Prose Friday at 7. Free.

Indian filmmaker Bala, who won his country’s national award for best director in 2009, explores the life of an abandoned 14-year-old who must go up against a local gang lord in his film I Am God. It’s playing at the Freer Gallery Friday at 7; free.

The DC-based country-rock group the Junior League Band, fronted by banjo-playing lead singer Lissy Rosemont, is playing Strathmore’s Friday Night Eclectic. Buy tickets ($10) from Strathmore. They’re also available for $12 at the door. The show starts at 8.

Get an early start on St. Patrick’s Day festivities at Saturday’s Leprechaun Lap Bar tour. The tenth annual pub crawl visits more than 13 downtown DC bars, which will all have drink specials. You can pick up day-of tickets at Mackey’s or buy one in advance ($9) from Xorbia. 1 to 9.

Artist and Howard University professor Lila Oliver Asher has been printmaking for more than 60 years. Her new solo exhibit of linocuts, “Reflections Past and Present,” opens at the Washington Printmakers Gallery (8230 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring) Saturday. There’s a reception at 1; free.
