The Wrap-Up: The Week in Food

Every Friday, we fill you in on what's been happening in the local restaurant world.

A grease fire broke out yesterday at Olives, Todd English’s power-lunch spot on K Street, Northwest. The restaurant, currently closed, is expected to reopen sometime next week.

Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, and 100 congressional spouses stopped by the Capitol Area Food Bank yesterday to help volunteers put together lunch bags for low-income children. This isn’t the first time the First Lady has lent a hand: In March, she served meals to the homeless at Miriam’s Kitchen in DC’s Foggy Bottom.

Spike Mendelsohn, Former Top Cheffer and current owner of Capitol Hill’s Good Stuff Eatery, tracked his past week of eating in DC and New York City. According to Grub Street, he was in New York to scout locations for another Good Stuff and is looking in Los Angeles and Miami, too. Locally, Mendelsohn name-checks Peregrine Espresso, Taylor Gourmet, Eastern Market, and the zucchini/corn beignets at the Capitol Skyline hotel. Later he says, “I usually like to start the night at Michel Richard’s Citronelle” for its cucumber gin and tonics. Then to “spice it up a little bit,” he loaded up on pork tacos, ceviche, and a margarita at Oyamel. And that’s just Sunday.

Dupont Circle standby Mark and Orlando’s closed for good last night. Co-owner Mark Medley cracked a Yuengling early on and made the rounds in the dining room. He says to expect to see the pair turn up again. They’re looking at a few locations, including one in NoMa.

Bread guru Mark Furstenburg, who founded both Marvelous Market and Breadline, is planning to open a downtown restaurant (1706 G St., NW) in August. The kitchen will focus on street food from around the world—Sweden, Singapore—and serve crepes and Montreal-style bagels.
