Real Wedding: Elizabeth and Brian Young

A blind date led to this couple's elegant nuptials at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle.

When Elizabeth Mullen’s friend said she needed to do a better job of setting Liz up with her bachelor coworkers, Liz didn’t think much of it. But she quickly realized how serious her friend had been when the very next day she had a date on the calendar with Brian Young, a trial attorney for the US Department of Justice. The pair met for drinks after work that Friday. Though both were timid at first, they quickly warmed to one another, and their casual cocktails turned into a three-hour conversation. “Once we realized we had a lot in common, he seemed to open up, and flashed the biggest, cutest grin,” says Liz. Three years later, Brian took Liz on a trip to Portland, Maine, where he mapped out a walk through Lincoln Park to pop the question right by a fountain.

Eleven months later, the couple wed at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle and celebrated with loved ones at the Fairmont Georgetown, pulling on pops of summer colors to brighten their festivities. Brian and Liz took a moment to Facetime a friend on assignment in Afghanistan, sipped their signature DC gin rickey cocktail, and danced the night away to Ray Lamontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing,” before jetting off to their honeymoon in French Polynesia.
