The Best Looks from Tuesday’s State Dinner

Namely, Michelle Obama’s gorgeous Carolina Herrera gown.

Try as we might, no one does black tie in this town better than Michelle Obama.

The First Lady stunned at last night’s White House’s dinner honoring French President François Hollande in a custom-made, powder-blue-and-black gown by Carolina Herrera—a powerhouse label for elegant eveningwear and a favorite of such high-profile clients as Sofia Vergara and Anna Wintour. Mrs. Obama has worn the Venezuelan designer on several occasions, including during a trip to Berlin last year.

Speaking of Wintour: While Vogue’s editor in chief was not present at this year’s dinner—two years ago, she attended the event in honor of Great Britain’s prime minister— Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles made an appearance.

Coles’s ensemble, a sleeveless black KaufmanFranco gown with leather accents and sheer panels at the shoulders, is the topic of many a conversation this morning, following the eccentric editor’s declaration that she hoped the dress wasn’t “too slutty.”
