Fit-A-Sutra: The Healthy Valentine’s Celebration

Looking for a way to avoid the elbow-grazing and line-waiting that’s sure to take place at many restaurants on Valentine’s Day? Or perhaps you want a healthier way to say “I love you” than a box of chocolates and baked goods. How about this saucy alternat

The Washington Sports Club in North Bethesda is holding its second annual Fit-A-Sutra class on Valentine's Day at 7:30 PM. Members and nonmembers are invited to come out for this free workout.

Fitness power couple Kirsten and Sean Molloy will lead lovebirds through a series of yoga and strength-training moves with an emphasis on weight-bearing exercises. The class starts out with a relaxed warm-up and transitions into a faster-paced partner-oriented routine. Some moves require a little extra coordination, such as squats in which both partners hold the end of a towel while one performs the motion and the other acts as an anchor. Yoga poses take an intimate turn when one partner stands behind the other in Downward Dog, pulling back the hips for a deeper stretch. And then there’s the double-decker plank, with one partner positioned on his or her elbows while the other holds the pose on his or her hands above.

Last year’s Fit-A-Sutra attracted people of all ages, with couples ranging from their early 20s to 50s. “This is an opportunity for two people to come together and share a positive, healthy, invigorating experience,” Kirsten says. So put down the candy and drop in to see if you and your honey can grow a little closer while working up a sweat. Things are bound to get steamy. . . .
