Holiday Goodies: The Cookies Crumble

Gazing at the pastry case at Yetenbi—formerly Chez Hareg—you have to wonder: Is this Little Ethiopia or Little Italy? Chocolate-ginger biscotti have the perfect crumbly texture, while almond sablés are a soft, light version of shortbread. But the melt-in-your-mouth palmiers convince us there’s nothing more simply delicious than puff pastry and sugar. Cookies are 50 cents each; three palmiers can be had for $1. Yetenbi ships its cookies, and packaged egg- and dairy-free versions are available at Whole Foods under the old Chez Hareg name.
