For home mixologists looking to impress friends, local cocktail guru Derek M. Brown offers two monthly classes ($65 each)—one focusing on flavors and one on technique—in the Columbia Room, a cocktail “lab” in the Passenger (1021 Seventh St., NW; 202-393-0220), the new downtown DC bar Brown and his brother Tom own. The room can also be rented for private classes and parties (starting at $750 for up to 18 guests); gift certificates are available. When Mad Men fiends are armed with new cocktail recipes they’re itching to show off, some killer New Year’s Eve parties are sure to follow.
