What’s special: The 28 European-inspired guest rooms feature period antiques and luxe linens. Each room has a fireplace as well as distinct floor designs, from Spanish tile to walnut parquet. Wedmore Place is a member of the Select Registry and Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and the atmosphere is elegant but relaxed. The hotel is on the grounds of the Williamsburg Winery, which released its first wine in 1988 and has grown from a modest 2,000 cases that year to 60,000 today. It’s now the largest winery in Virginia.

What’s special: The hotel is close to Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State Building, the United Nations, the theater district, Fifth Avenue, and restaurants and shops—and yet it’s in a quiet location. From the stunning lobby done in marble and warm mahogany to its well-appointed guest rooms, sunlit cafe, Japanese restaurant, and welcoming Bar Lounge, the Kitano’s ambience is inviting and elegant. Service is top-notch.

Richmond Retreat
Where: The Jefferson Hotel, 101 W. Franklin St., Richmond, Va.; 804-788-8000.
What’s special: This historic hotel opened in 1895, and guests have included 12 US Presidents as well as entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. In 1969, the Jefferson—considered one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in the nation—was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1986, it was restored to its original glory—stained-glass windows were retrieved, gold-leaf ornamentation was restored, mahogany trim was uncovered, and famous paintings were taken from storage and put on display. Today, the rotunda lobby, with its grand staircase, reminds guests of a bygone era. Elegant guest rooms, a fitness center and indoor pool, impeccable service, and both fine and casual dining have helped earn it a Mobil five-star award.
The deal: The hotel’s Winter Bed and Breakfast Package includes an overnight room, traditional Southern breakfast for two (including tip), and valet parking. Almost Heaven

What’s special: A member of Select Registry, the premier innkeeping association in the United States and Canada, the inn has been called “an outpost of luxury in the wilderness.” By day, you can take in majestic views of Smoke Hole Valley from the front porch; at night, you can stargaze—a telescope is available for guests. The three-story log-cabin inn has ten rooms, including private cabins. Some rooms have fireplaces, others have whirlpool tubs, and some have both. Innkeepers Ed and Carol Fischer are good cooks and have a jar of homemade cookies waiting for guests at the door.
