Matt Stanton: 40 Under 40

The young lobbyists with the most influence in Washington

Names: Matt Stanton
Firms: Fortune Brands
Ages: 38

Tony and Heather Podesta may be Washington’s favorite lobbying power couple, but Matt and Shanti Stanton also make an impressive husband/wife duo. Matt is vice president of public affairs for Fortune Brands, which houses the nation’s largest spirits and golf companies as well as a significant home-security portfolio. Intellectual-property issues concern the golf business, and the alcohol company needs him to keep tabs on excise taxes. Working for window and door manufacturers on Fortune’s home-security roster, Matt successfully led an effort to bolster incentives for consumers to buy energy-efficient doors and windows.
