45 Bikes & Hikes: Covered Bridges Ride

Frederick County, Md.
Take a Spin on Country Lanes
Covered
Bridges Ride

Distance: 39.8-mile loop.

Photograph by Michael Procario.

This loop has challenging stretches along country roads, but
the quiet lanes that lead to three covered bridges are worth the journey.
Starting in Utica District Park—near Utica Covered Bridge, built in
1850—the ride meanders by fields of sheep and cows. Throughout the ride,
Catoctin Mountain serves as a guide, over your bars or by your side.
Linger at Loy’s Station Covered Bridge and dangle your toes in Owens
Creek. Walk over the bridge to see the massive beams and posts that
support the 19th-century structure. After Roddy Covered Bridge, the third
and last, the route has some long straightaways and a few hilly stretches,
but none too difficult. At mile 29.7 is another historic bridge, the
five-arched limestone LeGore Bridge over the Monocacy River. To download a
brochure with a map and cue sheet, see the bike Frederick website.
