When Six Flags America in Bowie opens its newest attraction in July—the Bonzai Pipelines water slide—riders will fall through a trapdoor-like platform and plummet more than 250 feet, reaching speeds of up to 40 miles an hour inside a fiberglass tube. Here’s what happened before they could take the plunge.

Construction took about four months. The ride used 438 pieces of fiberglass, 34 columns, and 52 crossbeams and braces. There are eight flights of stairs to the starting platform.
