Intimacy and Luxury

Where: Clifton Inn, Charlottesville, Va.; 434-971-1800.

What’s special: On 100 acres in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Clifton offers the intimacy
of a small inn and the comfort of a luxury hotel. Each of the 17 rooms features luxury
linens, fresh flowers, and plush terrycloth robes. Add to that the yard games, swimming
pool, and tennis court and you may never want to leave the resort. But a world of
activities awaits off property, including Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, wineries,
ballooning, shopping, and hiking.

The deal: The Summer Savor Package includes accommodations, afternoon tea with fresh pastries,
a four-course dinner for two in Chef Tucker Yoder’s Americana-style restaurant one
evening, continental breakfast daily, and a departure gift of the coffee-table book

Private Washington. The regular package price starts
at $369 a night, but mention Washingtonian.com when booking to receive an
additional 20 percent off.

When: Valid June and July 2013.

Reliving History

Where: Gettysburg Hotel, Gettysburg, Pa.; 717-337-2000.

What’s special: The hotel has just undergone a
multimillion-dollar renovation—a new lobby, refurbished
guest rooms, and a new restaurant, One Lincoln—while still
retaining its historic
integrity. Located on Lincoln Square in downtown Gettysburg,
the hotel is a member
of Historic Hotels of America. There’s a fitness center and a
rooftop pool, and the
hotel is walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the Civil
War battlefield and
other attractions. This year the area celebrates the 150th
anniversary of both the
Battle of Gettysburg and President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
with special events.

The deal: The Civil War Experience Package includes two days of accommodations, breakfast daily,
and a two-day pass for the Museum and Visitors Center at Gettysburg National Military
Park, where you can see the film
A New Birth of Freedom, narrated by Morgan Freeman, and the Gettysburg Cyclorama, America’s largest painting,
with its sound and light show. You’ll also receive a 56-page battlefield guidebook
with maps, photos, and trivia; with it, you could take a self-guided driving tour.
Visit the American Civil War Wax Museum and you’ll also get a free copy of the book

Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Künstler. Rates for this two-day package start at $370 per couple or $424 per family (two children
ages 6 through 12; each additional child and those over 12 are extra), a 25-percent
savings over regular rates. Mention Washingtonian.com when booking to also receive
two free appetizers or one free appetizer and one dessert in the hotel restaurant.

When: Valid June through September 2013.
