St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally an occasion that’s mostly about drinking green beer—so it’s not too surprising that race options are slim to none, at least here in Washington. Still, there are three races in DC and Virginia that promise a good time. The really good news? None of them takes place on March 17, so you can get in a run and still be able to celebrate St. Patty’s until you’re green in the face.

IN DC

Capital Running Company St. Patrick’s Day 8K
Sunday, March 11, at 9 AM
You’ll help support local organizations, including Special Olympics DC, Habitat for Humanity, and Back on My Feet, by signing up for this race. The 8K starts and finishes near Freedom Plaza and goes through downtown DC, past museums, and across the Mall. Kids can race in the 1K fun run. Music, food, and refreshments will be available before and after the race. Register here for $30 until March 8, $35 between March 9 and 10, and $40 on race day.

IN VIRGINIA

Four Courts Four Miler
Saturday, March 10, at 9 AM
This race starts and ends at Ireland’s Four Courts (2051 Wilson Blvd., Arlington). Four miles sound like a piece of cake? Organizers warn that while the first half is downhill, the second is completely uphill. The good news is that runners will be rewarded with food and booze post-race. Register here for $40.

Lucky Leprechaun Fun Run
Thursday, March 15, at 6:30 PM
Potomac River Running in Reston is hosting a fun run two days before St. Patrick’s Day. The only competition at this run will be finding hidden Mizuno gear and store items along the Washington & Old Dominion trail—but everyone will be able to find a gift, Potomac says. Drinks and snacks will be provided after the run. Free.
