Where to Find Out About Everything Gluten-Free

The DC-Gluten Free Expo will feature more than 60 gluten-free vendors.

Ever wonder if it’s possible to bake a gluten-free chocolate cake that’s actually tasty? Can’t find a GF pasta that doesn’t turn to mush? Then you’ll probably want to head to the second annual DC Gluten-Free Expo this Friday.

Sixty gluten-free vendors will be on hand at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel (1201 K St., NW) to offer free samples of their products. Items will also be sold at a discounted price. Popular vendors will include Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza, Bard’s Beer, and Glutino.

Mrs. United States 2011 Shannon Ford will also be a special guest, and will be helping kids decorate gluten-free cupcakes throughout the day. Ford was diagnosed with celiac disease, a condition that causes damage to the lining of the small intestine and prevents absorption of important nutrients. It affects approximately 1 in 133 Americans.

Gluten-free experts from Delight Gluten-Free Magazine, Children’s National Medical Center, and Alexandria Clinical Research will also be there to answer any questions you might have about a gluten-free diet and celiac disease.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Celiac Disease Program at Children’s National Medical Center.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children five and under. The expo will take place Friday, June 15, from 3 to 8 PM. Visit the DC Gluten-Free Expo website to register.
