Great Hair 2010: Best Blowouts

In Turkey—where some women get styled twice a day—a hairdresser becomes an expert with a hair dryer. Here are some local Turks who are standouts for blowouts.

Rose Are at Elite for Hair Mini Spa Salon, 2315 Wisconsin Ave., NW; 202-337-8048.

Are’s blowouts are a relative deal compared with those at salons a few blocks away, and fashionistas such as CityShopGirl’s Kelly Collis Fredrick have discovered this unassuming Glover Park salon. Blowout: $40.

Guven Baltaci at Digos Salon, 3713 Newark St., NW; 202-244-0040.

Client Elchin Orer admits she never blow-dried her hair when she lived in Turkey: “My apartment was above a hairdresser.” The DC interior designer says she can do her own hair but much prefers Baltaci’s touch. Blowout: $40.

Zeke Baskaya at Headliner Hair Salon, 5008 Connecticut Ave., NW; 202-966-9662.

Owner Baskaya gives a blow-dry that, says one regular, “has nice volume on top so you don’t have that flat-head look.” Blowout: $40 and up.

Tom Cakirca at European Hair Designers, 6262 F Old Dominion Dr., McLean; 703-442-0582.

Fresh from Manhattan’s famed Frédéric Fekkai salon, Cakirca also colors and cuts. Blowout: $35.

Enver Coban at  George at the Four Seasons Salon, 2828 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; 202-342-1942.

“The best blowout in the history of blowouts,” raves Ada Polla, owner of the beauty emporium Alchimie Forever. Another big favorite is Ismail Tekin. Blowout: $50.

Mistik Halici at Hair Lounge Salon, 2201 Wisconsin Ave., NW; 202-337-0951.

Halici is known for his humidity-defying blowouts. Says one fan: “I don’t know how he does it, but my hair is frizz-free for days.” Blowout: $50.

Gazi Karababa at Toka Salon & Day Spa, 3251 Prospect St., NW; 202-333-5133.

Known as one of the fastest blowers in the salon, Karababa quick-dries clients Katty Kay of the BBC; Alyssa Mastromonaco, President Obama’s director of scheduling; and Anita McBride, assistant to former President George W. Bush and chief of staff to Laura Bush. Blowout: $55 and up.

Andrew Kucuk at Salon Bella, 1880 Howard Ave., Vienna; 703-288-5500.

Kucuk is fast and friendly, and we hear his movie-star good looks also keep clients coming back. Blowout: $40.

Mesut Ozaydin at Violet Hair and Skin Care, 1513 Wisconsin Ave., NW; 202-337-3477.

Ozaydin’s salon chair—he was formerly at Toka—has become a seat of power for Washington’s power elite. Clients have included Desirée Rogers and the Bush twins. Blowout: $55.

Ercan Yucel at Imaj Hair Salon, 3301 Connecticut Ave., NW; 202-966-7979.

Yucel tames the locks of clients from the Turkish embassy and handles the manes of Joyce Rumsfeld and writer Maureen Orth. Blowouts: $35 and up.
