About Florida Avenue Grill
It’s easy to find a place to grab a plate of eggs and bacon. The reason to snag a stool at this scruffy diner near Howard University is to experience a cultural touchstone. The neighborhood has changed, but this greasy spoon stands as a reminder of the days when U Street was a bastion of black Washington. The cooking—fried eggs and a half-smoke; a buttery biscuit smothered in gravy; grits capped with a thick pat of butter—is serviceable at best, though generous and filling. Every dish is enhanced by the sense of time travel, not to mention the museum-like display of signed celebrity photos, from Janet Reno to Ludacris. Tuesday through Saturday 8 am to 9 pm, Sunday 8 to 4:30.
