Sidewalk Style: Hitting All the Right Notes

We stop two musicians whose styles, complete with coordinating scarves, are very much in tune.

Storm Garner, 25

Musician and student, Columbia University

Jonathan Vincent, 34

Singer and composer

What sort of music do you play?

Storm: “We just decided on the Wilder Worldwide for our name. It’s sort of cabaret-folk.”

Jonathan: “Sort of Tom Waits meets Nico meets Kurt Weill.”

What Jonathan is wearing:

Vivo Barefoot shoes (“I’m in love with these shoes”), H&M jeans, Urban Outfitters belt, wool sweater from a thrift store in Scotland, scarf from the Andover Shop in Massachusetts. The glasses are from 39dollarglasses.com, “but they were $59,” he laughs. The bag is Storm’s; her father brought it back from Tajikistan for her.

Jonathan: “Some guy rear-ended us the other day and her neck hurts, so I’m carrying her bag.”

Storm: “I think men should always wear purses. It’s the ultimate show of gallantry. And the strap across the chest is kinda hot.”

How would you describe your style?
Jonathan: “Professorial . . . something.”
Storm: “I knew you were going to say that! He definitely wears jackets with the patches on the elbows.”
Jonathan: “I had a composition professor in college whose style I like to emulate.”
Storm: “We saw him earlier today, and he was wearing two plaid shirts layered over one another and a yellow hat. It was great.”

What Storm is wearing:

Jenitisport boots, thigh-high socks, and a favorite winter skirt in pleated wool, purchased in Italy. Her jacket, from Benetton, is layered over a light-gray cashmere hoodie. Her scarf is from Scotland.

Storm, how would you describe your style?
“My younger sister and her friends call it ‘Amish vogue.’ I tend to wear peasanty stuff. I grew up in Paris, and I’m sure that helps the vogue part.”

Where do you like to shop?

Storm: “I’m a firm believer in buying secondhand and sustainable things. There’s so much stuff in the world.”

Rachel says:
I adore the way Storm is rocking this skirt. Short, pleated skirts have been terribly misrepresented, having been cheesified by one too many bad Halloween getups and the “Oops! . . . I Did It Again” video, but Storm’s beautifully made wool version brings the look back to its preppy, playful roots. Paired with a sophisticated blazer and cool, sporty boots, it’s just right.

Weigh in on Storm’s outfit!
