Sidewalk Style: Grrrr-unge!

For this week's Sidewalk Style, we stopped a leggy high-school senior bringing back the ’90s with a modern take on plaid, the grunge-era staple.

By Rachel Cothran   Published Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Elaine Jackson, 19
Senior, Ballou High School

What she’s wearing: Plaid shirt-dress from Urban Outfitters, H&M bag, Steve Madden heels, and Forever 21 enamel bangles: “Beyoncé wore these shoes—well, probably expensive versions of them.”

Describe your style. “It all depends on how I feel when I wake up. I like to look like I have a punk-rock band. I like dressing up.”

Any particular rock-style icons? “The lead singer of In This Moment. They’re a heavy metal band.”

What are people at your school wearing? “It’s really retro ’80s . . . a lot of mismatching colors and patterns. It’s almost too much.”

Dream job? “I want to be a makeup artist. Hopefully, behind the scenes at concerts and shows in LA or New York.”

Rachel says:
Everyone’s been talking about the return of grunge in fashion lately, most notably on Mary-Kate Olsen (who, incidentally, has been rocking plaid since at least fall ’06).

What do you think of Elaine's outfit? We want to know! Leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

I love this look, but have to admit - maybe I’m staid and old fashioned - but I kinda gasped when I read she’s a high school senior. Gorgeous, stylish, but...

It sends a bad message when parents allow their teenage daughters to wear such short dresses. I know I resented my parents’ strict dress code, but they taught me that having style and feeling beautiful is not just about showing skin. But besides that... just because something is plaid doesn’t make it modern grunge. Would you call Burburry grunge?

I’m all about the plaid, and I can see the Mary Kate Olsen inspiration. The shoes on the other hand...I don’t think even Beyonce could pull those off. They’re LOUD.

She looks like a street walker.

Honestly, I don’t see anything early-90s or "grunge" about this.
