Sidewalk Style: Pretty in Plaid

We stop a woman dressed in bright tights and plenty of plaid.

Alana Morrissey, 24
Consultant at Capgemini

What she’s wearing:
Soïa & Kyo coat from Bliss in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; an old Kate Spade bag; American Apparel tights; sunglasses from Junction Vintage; and Cole Hahn flats.

Where do you like to shop?
“I love to find things from stores in DC. The two vintage stores in my neighborhood, Treasury and Junction, have great finds, especially for accessories. It’s awesome to be able to support the local businesses and find really unique items at the same time. I also love to buy things when I travel to a new city or country—pieces that remind you of a place or an event make getting dressed a lot more fun.”

How would you describe your look?
“I like clothes that fit well to my size. I’m fairly petite, so the flowy/peasant look doesn’t really work for me or match my personality so much. I like urban, chic clothes that allow me to go throughout my day in the city and not get in the way but still look interesting.”

What are you looking forward to wearing once spring (finally) arrives?
“Shorts! They can be practical and really fun at the same time, depending what you pair them with. I like to find things you can take from day to night by switching a few items. Shorts let you show off a pair of fun shoes or tights, which can totally change your look. I’m also a huge fan of jackets, and I love some of the bright colors of spring, like orange and yellow. I like colors that make people stop and look, whether or not they like the outfit.”

Favorite thing in your closet and why?
“A fur muff I got from a vintage store in the area. It even has a hidden zipper so you don’t have to bring a purse along at night. It’s kind of diva-esque, so you can’t help but smile when you wear it.”

Rachel says:

I think a somewhat mod look is always good, especially for someone petite or someone who doesn’t mind a more leg-focused silhouette. The square shape of the bag echoes the windowpane pattern of the plaid and looks just right.
