Amanda McClements Previews Salt & Sundry With a Pop-Up Shop This Weekend

The kitchen and entertaining boutique will be Union Market’s first retail destination.

There’s been a lot of foodie buzz about Union Market, the sleek new covered marketplace in Northeast. And while we love oysters and kimchee tacos as much as the next Washingtonian, the one development we’ve been keeping an especially close eye on is Salt & Sundry, a kitchen and entertaining boutique from local food writer Amanda McClements.

“The shop will be a new platform for me to share my entertaining ideas and design aesthetic,” says McClements. “It’s a bit Southern Americana meets bohemian chic. Rustic refined.”

Salt & Sundry will officially open later this winter (and in 1,100 square feet of Union Market floor space, to boot), but McClements is giving us a peek this weekend with a pop-up shop in the permanent space. Some of the wares you’ll find:

• Handcrafted farm tables made by McClements’s father, Walter

• Ceramic salt cellars, honey pots, and cheese trays designed in collaboration with NOVA-based ceramicist Amber Kendrick of Cloud Terre

• Vintage silverware

• Sustainable-wood serving boards and utensils

• Small-batch artisanal goodies—think nut butters from Big Spoon Roaster, Gordy’s pickles, Langdon Wood maple syrups, and various tonics and cocktail syrups

The pop-up runs 11 to 8 Friday and 11 to 6 Saturday and Sunday. Union Market is located at 1309 Fifth Street, Northeast. Bonus treat: If you stop by on the early side Saturday and Sunday morning, pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac will be selling doughnuts from Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s upcoming chicken-and-doughnut restaurant, GBD for $1 a pop.
