It goes without saying that the runway show is the ultimate trendsetter—something about a world-renowned designer claiming a look as stylish leads us to run out and snag the first version we can find (hello, harem pants).

The same is true for the makeup looks they have their models sport down the runway. Seasons past have brought such prevalent trends as sleek, center-parted hair, neon lips, and bold brows—and this year is no exception to the bold beauty trend game. We asked local makeup artist Laura Bateman for her insight into fall and winter’s most popular makeup looks—as shown on runways from Alice & Olivia to Burberry—and how to achieve them on your own.

Burgundy Lips

“The big sister of the traditional red lip, burgundy and wine were all over the fall 2013 runways and will be popular this year with women of every skin tone. Try a darker lip instead of a smoky eye for the evening, and keep the rest of your makeup minimal for a fresh, sophisticated look.”

The goods: “Tom Ford Beauty’s Black Orchid lipstick ($49) makes a strong statement, as does Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Train Bleu ($25).”

Dramatic Winged Liner

“Just like Mara Hoffman and Anna Sui’s fall 2013 models, make your look edgy and powerful by tracing black liquid liner along the upper lash line and extending the line out to the end of your brow, ending in slight curve upward.”

The goods: “Eyeko skinny liquid liner ($16) and Stila’s Stay All Day waterproof liquid eye liner ($20) are my favorites.”

No-Makeup Makeup

“A big trend for this fall is the ‘no-makeup’ look, as seen at Theysken’s Theory and Narciso Rodriguez and on countless fashion editors—a look achieved by strategically applying neutral products to create a pulled-together yet fresh-faced finish perfect for daytime.”

The goods: “Burberry’s Lip Mist in Trench Kiss ($30), Chanel’s Vitalumière Aqua skin-perfecting makeup ($45), and the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette ($52) will give you a flawless, barely there effect.”

Copper Lids

“Gold and copper lids stood out at the J. Mendel and Givenchy fall shows, and are very wearable for everyday.”

The goods: “Applying a sheer wash of one of these bold cream shadows over your eyelid will brighten your whole face. Try Stila’s Magnificent Metals foil finish eye shadow in Comex Copper ($32) or CoverGirl’s Flamed Out shadow pot in Melted Gold ($5).”
